About Luke Stroebel Art & Design

Luke is a graphic designer, illustrator, and multimedia designer.
Working as a freelancer for large corporations and individual projects while serving multiple markets, Luke made a name for himself by designing album covers for music artists & record labels, festival flyers, collaborating with skateboarding companies and partnering with clothing and apparel brands. Luke has continued delivering on his passion by helping new companies design their logos and various other branding and digital marketing campaigns.

Working remotely out of Cape Town, South Africa, this is how Luke met Jay (Co-owner of Sushi by Sea). Jay and Cris (Head Chef and Co-owner) included Luke in their early days of their pop ups as they wanted a unique yet still Japanese like logo. In creating the logo Luke, took inspiration from the Japanese Daruma – a doll or talisman – modelled after the Bodhidharma – the founder of the Zen tradition. The Daruma doll represents discipline and perseverance, it is traditionally red in color, which represents good luck and blessed fortune. The intention was to create something with traditional elements with a Western twist in the form of a character and derived logo mark.

 

Sushi by Sea Owners: “Usually, Daruma dolls can look quite intimidating but the Sushi By Sea rendition is a bit more lighthearted and cheerful and pulls in personal physical attributes of each owner. Ask us about it at our counter. It is a true signifier of the friendships that can be kindled over a great meal.”
